Haribon gains new partners in conservation this month: ABB Inc., a subsidiary of ABB Asea Brown Boveri Ltd. in Zurich Switzerland and Power-One, a leading provider of renewable energy and power management solutions. Together, we will plant more native tree species via our ROAD to 2020 campaign.

CHR & Country Sustainability Controller, Marivic Miranda & Occupational Health Nurse, Agnes Magpile endorses the adopt-a-seedling donation to Haribon Foundation’s Partnership Development Officer, Brian G. Sunga after a short briefing for ABB, Inc. volunteer employees.

August 2014

ABB, Inc. a subsidiary of ABB Asea Brown Boveri Ltd. in Zurich Switzerland, the leading power and automation technology group, and Power-One, Inc., a leading provider of renewable energy and of energy-efficient power conversion and power management solutions, recently partnered with Haribon Foundation for the Conservation of Natural Resources, Inc. for Rainforest Organization and Advocates (ROAD) 2020, an environmental conservation movement committed to restore one million hectares of Philippine rainforests using native tree species by year 2020 to sustain provision of ecological goods and services by year 2020 through an informed and engaged public.

Inspired by Haribon Foundation’s 1 million signature campaign against commercial logging and mining in natural forests, and ABB’s sustainability priorities of balancing economic success, environmental stewardship and social progress to benefit all our stakeholders, the use of native trees in the adopt-a-seedling program will be implemented together with ABB, Inc. volunteer employees who will be engaging in tree-planting with nurturing activities in one of the identified restoration site in Laguna to solidify their commitment to restoring and balancing the ecosystem.

These seedlings will have a greater chance of survival as compared to the fast-growing exotic trees that have caused nutrient imbalances with the reforestation. Instead of this kind of “reforestation”, Haribon advocates rainforestation. A rainforested area can provide ecological benefits which are linked to human survival. Rainforestation also provides economic benefits. Indeed, there are no substitutes to Philippine native trees and their importance in our lives.

Overall, for 2014 and after, ABB has developed a series of business-relevant sustainability objectives to reflect the company’s levels of ambition and show how ABB intends to contribute to a more sustainable world.

ABB (www.abb.com) is a leader in power and automation technologies that enable utility and industry customers to improve their performance while lowering environmental impact. The ABB Group of companies operates in around 100 countries and employs about 150,000 people.
