Held for two days on April 26 and April 28, the fun birding activities were Haribon’s contribution to the “Fledge to Pledge” (P2F) initiative, an international grassroots campaign where birders commit to bring their friends who have never been into birdwatching before to see our feathery tree inhabitants basking in their full winged glory.
Last week, Haribon introduced parents, their kids, office staff and professionals to a whole new experience for them – birdwatching!
Held for two days on April 26 and April 28, the fun birding activities were Haribon’s contribution to the “Fledge to Pledge” (P2F) initiative, an international grassroots campaign where birders commit to bring their friends who have never been into birdwatching before to see our feathery tree inhabitants basking in their full winged glory.
Haribon deployed two contingents for Fledge to Pledge, one each in the northern and southern parts of Metro Manila (in the University of the Philippines-Diliman and Alabang Filinvest Corporate City, respectively). Altogether, we were able to bring along 23 birdwatchers, more than half of whom were newbies!
Looking thru the spoting scope
Internationally, the P2F campaign happened from April 25th to April 29th, participated by many countries, from Vietnam to Ghana. In the Philippines, Haribon was one of several organizations that took part.
Armed with our binoculars and spotting scopes, the Haribon teams looked for and saw 13 species in UP-Diliman, including the endemic species Philippine pygmy woodpecker (Dendrocopos maculatus) and the lowland white-eye(Zosterops meyeni). The Alabang team also saw two endemic species out of the 14 species that they ticked off in their individual bird lists.
Watch out for Haribon’s continuing birding activities this month. We pledge not just to fledge, but to do it all year round!
