500 prints were made of the original painting by John Ruthyen made in 1975 when the eagle's name was changed from "Monkey-eating Eagle" to the "Philippine Eagle." 40 prints are left and are now offered to potential donors interested in contributing funds to support environment conservation in the Philippines. The print measures 39" × 30.5".
The Philippine Eagle, also known as the Haring Ibon, Agila, Manaol Tipule, Mamboogook, Malamboogook or Garuda in native dialects, has been declared as the Philippine National Bird in 1995. The Philippine Eagle, which is found only in the Philippines, is a very majestic bird, it being the second largest eagle in the world, next to Central and South America's Harpy Eagle.
It can only be found in the dipterocarp forests of Luzon, Samar, Leyte and Mindanao. Rapid forest loss in these areas only left us with about 200 pairs of the Philippine Eagle in the wild. The World Conservation Union has classified it as critically endangered. Without remedial action, the Philippine Eagle has a fifty percent chance of survival in the next ten years. For this reason, the Philippine Eagle has been made a fitting symbol of the urgency to conserve the Philippine environment.
The prints are in a very limited edition of 500 done by wildlife artist John Ruthven. In 1975, the original painting was presented to then President Ferdinand Marcos, who in the same year changed the bird's name from Monkey-eating Eagle to the Philippine Eagle. Only 40 print outs – of the 500 remain.
Only prints of the artwork are available. Framing to be done by donor. Proceeds go to our continued conservation work.
