Selecting a special gift can be challenging, especially for busy people like this Haribon supporter. Here she shares how she chooses to give a gift that keeps on giving.

By Christine Dapa, Executive Search Consultant, The People At Work-Asia Pacific

I’m Christine, working in a corporate world concerned about the environment. All throughout my high school and college days in the University of Santo Tomas (UST), I always saw Haribon Foundation conduct drives and other activities on campus. While I didn’t participate in any of the on-site tree planting projects of the organization, I did try to help them out in other ways like information distribution, signature campaigns, and many more.

Haribon’s Adopt-A-Seedling (AAS) is an awesome program from my point of view. Every time I donate to this program, I get to have a tree planted in honor of my friends and family. It’s so cool to have a tree planted in their name. I also get nature cards as bonus gifts. I like AAS because the seedlings planted are native trees and being managed by Haribon’s community partners for three years to ensure their survival, plus it’s so easy to donate online via credit card especially for busy people like me who are very far from the Haribon office in Quezon City.

I believe these gifts are more lasting and permanent — gifts that can benefit not just the recipient, but the succeeding generations of their family as well. This is precisely why I find contributing positively to the environment fulfilling. By caring for the environment, I am helping everybody out, myself included. At least with these small actions, I can make a difference. I’ve also shared this project to family and friends abroad who would like to contribute since they are also looking for ways on how to help Mother Nature.

I know that the condition of our country’s environment is far from ideal and I often find myself complaining about it. It irks me when I see people callously acting like they do not have any responsibility. But then, I ask myself what I have actually done to make things right. It’s a good thing that there are organizations like Haribon which provide people like me with channels to help and raise awareness to continuously protect our ecosystem.

For those people who cannot be on-site in the planting grounds, I encourage you to support projects and institutions that focus on environment protection and conservation because it is not just our country that will benefit from these efforts but mankind as a whole.

Christine Dapa describes herself as a lifelong learner. She likes travel, food, culture and hates anything that harms the environment.

Haribon’s Adopt-A-Seedling Gift Tree program supports the Rainforest Organizations and Advocates (ROAD) to 2020 campaign that hopes to restore the Philippines’ natural forests using native trees. The recipient of the gift will get a special printed card or e-card while a native tree will be planted in his/her behalf in Haribon’s forest restoration sites. Gift Tree ideas include: wedding favors, holiday cards, graduations, fundraiser for your school or organization, corporate promotions, Earth Day celebrations, birthday cards, baby shower cards, any and all occasions. It’s another way of gifting while giving back to nature.
